Choosing Contact Lenses
If you decide that you want to wear contact lenses, there are many options to choose from. You can decide based on your vision needs and lifestyle. Some contacts may be uncomfortable for certain people. At New Century Ophthalmology, serving Oxford and Raleigh, NC, our team will help you choose the right contact lenses. Our optometrist will perform an eye exam to determine your vision and eye health needs. We will work with you every step of the way to ensure that your vision is at its best.
How to Choose Contact Lenses
There are many different factors to consider when choosing contact lenses.
Hard vs. Soft Contacts
Soft contact lenses are flexible and allow oxygen to pass through them. They are also disposable. Hard contact lenses, or rigid gas permeable lenses, maintain their shape more than soft contacts. They are often used for those that cannot wear soft contacts. Hard contacts can correct astigmatism and slow down the progression of nearsightedness. The clarity of vision comes into play, too. Those who need lenses for accuracy and reading may need to use rigid gas permeable lenses versus soft ones. Soft contact lenses generally don’t provide the full sharpness necessary for detail work and close up vision. Our ophthalmologist will help determine which lenses are right for you.
Extended Wear vs. Daily Wear
You can choose between contacts that last different amounts of time. Typically, there are daily contacts and extended wear contacts. Dailies are thrown away at the end of each day. Other contacts can be worn for weeks or up to a month. Our optometrist will help you decide based on your lifestyle and needs.
Hard to Fit Contacts
Some people cannot wear traditional contacts. Those with dry eye, astigmatism, keratoconus, and more may need specialty contacts. Our ophthalmologist will diagnose your condition and provide treatment. After, we will determine what contact lenses will be most comfortable for you.
