Causes of Cataracts

Most cataracts occur due to expected changes in the eyes as you age. When you hit 40, the proteins in the lenses of your eyes begin to break down and clump together. While your risk of cataracts increases with age, it is not the only risk factor. Certain health problems like diabetes, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, a family history of cataracts, eye injury, eye surgery, radiation treatment on your upper body, and extended time in the sun.

Symptoms of Cataracts

As they grow, cataracts can cause several changes in your vision, such as cloudy or blurry vision, faded colors, poor night vision, increased sensitivity to bright lights, double vision (which sometimes disappears as the cataract gets bigger), and frequent changes to your eyeglasses and contact lens prescriptions.

Ways to Prevent Cataracts

There are ways to prevent cataracts, whether you're at risk for developing them or not. Protect your eyes from harsh sunlight by wearing sunglasses and a hat with a brim. Wear protective eyewear whenever you can, especially during activities like using power tools, working power tools, or even sitting at the computer. Additionally, lifestyle changes like reducing your alcohol intake, quitting smoking, and eating a healthy diet can lessen your chances of developing cataracts.

Diagnosing Cataracts

Our eye doctor can diagnose cataracts as part of a dilated eye exam. During this exam, an ophthalmologist or optometrist can detect cataracts early and make sure you receive proper treatment.
