The Early Signs of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a severe eye condition that can lead to vision loss and ultimately blindness if left untreated. It is critical to detect and treat glaucoma early. At New Century Ophthalmology, with offices in Raleigh and Oxford, we treat a variety of eye diseases, including glaucoma. Let’s take a look at some of the early warning signs to keep in mind.

The Symptoms of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is often referred to as the "silent thief of sight" and there is a good reason. There are virtually no early warning signs, which is why it goes unnoticed until it progresses. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, we recommend scheduling an appointment with our ophthalmologist.

  • Changes in your peripheral vision - One of the aspects of vision that can become compromised is your peripheral vision (otherwise referred to as the ability to see from the corners of your eyes).
  • Severe eye pressure or pain - Some individuals may experience intense eye pressure or even pain in their eyes that could indicate glaucoma. Sometimes, increased eye pressure doesn't necessarily mean you already have glaucoma, but it typically means you have an elevated risk.
  • Halos around lights - Seeing halos around lights can be a symptom of glaucoma. Unfortunately, this symptom can also be followed by severe headaches, nausea, and even vomiting, which is considered a medical emergency.
  • Increased light sensitivity - If you notice that you feel more discomfort with certain light sources, whether natural or artificial, it could be an early sign of glaucoma.
  • Loss of vision in an eye - If you have a blind spot in your view or have a sudden loss of vision in an eye, it is time to visit our eye care specialist.
